Please Join LLRC in Supporting Room to Read

Once again LLRC has chosen Room to Read as its international literacy project. Founded in 2000 by former Microsoft executive John Wood, Room to Read partners with local communities in Nepal, Vietnam, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Laos, South Africa, India, and Zambia to build schools and educate children. Since 2000, Room to Read has (Statistics from roomtoread.org 8/19/08)

  • Established more than 5,160 libraries
  • Donated over 2.2 million books
  • Built 412 schools
  • Published over 2 million books in local languages
  • Funded 4,036 long-term girls' scholarships
  • Established 155 computer and language labs
  • Impacted the lives of over 1.7 million children

Room to Read has earned praise for its efficiency and effectiveness. Please check its website for more information and to see how you and your students can help improve world literacy.

If you are interested in sponsoring a fund-raiser at your school, LLRC can combine your funds with those of our organization and send one large check to Room to Read. Last year, one teacher raised over $300 with a "Jeans Day" at her school. This amount, combined with contributions at LLRC events, resulted in a $500 donation from LLRC to Room to Read - enough to fund a girl's 2 year scholarship. For more information, email Linda Neumann or call her at 717-560-1793.

Pack up and Head Out to The Environmental Education Center At Governor Dick

Consider partnering with LLRC as we support the Environmental Education Center at Lebanon County's Governor Dick Park! The center and park desperately desire more visitors, both young and old, and reading materials to support their programs.

We are collecting monetary contributions to give to the environmental center staff to purchase materials that match their programs. We are also hoping to spark more interest from families, teachers, and nature lovers to get out and explore this park! For more information about the park, please visit the website.

The Lancaster-Lebanon Reading Council would also like you to join us in this endeavor to link literacy with the great outdoors! Some members of our council will be joining together to read Richard Louv' book, The Last Child in the Woods: Saving our children from nature-deficit disorder. For more information about this book, please visit this website.

As you bundle up through this upcoming winter months, think of April and Earth Day 2009! LLRC will be celebrating our fundraising efforts and our reading of Richard Louv's book by participating in a project at Governor Dick! Please check back to this site for more information!

If you would like to make a contribution, or receive an invite to our Earth Day 2009 project, please email Karen Heisner.

LLRC Wants to Help You Help Your Students

Is there a software program that you'd love to try to improve your students reading, but you're not sure if it will work? Are there books that you could use to increase students reading of nonfiction? Perhaps you'd like to compare the choices of books for boys reading versus girls reading in your classroom, but you haven't enough books to research the difference? Maybe you'd like large rolls of paper to have your students create story maps, but the district cut the paper off your supply list? Whatever it may be, if it is something that can be researched in the classroom, classroom teachers or reading specialists have an opportunity to buy and try something new to improve their students' learning.

The Lancaster Lebanon Reading Council offers a $500.00 grant to teachers who would like to try classroom research. Not a member? It's easy to join. For more information about the grant and the requirements, check out the description, the guidelines and the application on this website. For membership information, go to the Keystone State Reading Association website or contact Andy Morrison.
