Purposes

Enhance Communication

  • to add a newsletter to be published three times each year to inform members about literacy issues and council events
  • to utilize information from a member survey (Spring, 2009) to drive the organizational focus
  • to organize board meetings so that time is used more productively
  • to inform board members of possible topics for discussion at least one week prior to a board meeting

Provide High-Caliber Professional Development

  • to sponsor events where national and local literacy experts are brought to our local area
  • to partner with three surrounding councils to provide members with an opportunity to attend a Regional Literacy Conference
  • to include recommendations and highlights of professional books, local literacy events, and valuable websites as a newsletter feature

Goals

  • to achieve IRA Honor Council status
  • to achieve KSRA Council Awards
  • to support and facilitate high-caliber literacy instruction through our programs
  • to increase and maintain current membership numbers
  • to provide information and opportunities for action in legislative matters involving literacy
  • to explore ways to increase our council’s revenue
